How To Navigate Insurance Coverage For A Safety Bed?

As many families are in the pursuit of insurance coverage for a safety bed, there are some important concepts that they need to be aware of. The most important understanding is that there are many entities that play a role in supporting coverage for a safety bed.

For those that have not tried pursuing coverage for a safety bed, these are the following entities that are involved with the process:

  1. The manufacturer of the bed. In this case, it would be our company, zPods.

  2. A doctor and/or therapist. These parties will be in charge of writing all necessary documentation that will be submitted to a customer's insurance provider.

  3. A durable medical equipment dealer. They will collect all of the documentation, complete any additional assessments of the customer's home, and then submit the documentation to the insurance provider.

If you are an individual that will be pursuing coverage for a safety bed, then all of the steps below are necessary, and each entity above needs to be thorough with recommendations and information clarifications.

Here are the steps in the order that we recommend:

  1. Reach out to zPods and send us a message that shares more about your situation and interest.

  2. Once you reach out to us you will receive an email with all of the necessary information to pursue coverage for a zPod.

  3. We will reach out to you and make ourselves available for any questions that you may have.

  4. You will need to read through the zPods Insurance Packet thoroughly so you understand all of the necessary information that is needed to see if your provider will cover a zPod.

  5. Then, please reach out to a recommended dme dealer that will be sent to you and start the discussion to confirm all necessary information that is needed for them as well.

  6. Schedule an appointment with your doctor and/or therapist and have them complete the zPods Insurance Packet.

  7. Make sure you follow up with your doctor and/or therapist to make sure they complete the packet and send it to the DME Dealer.

  8. Make sure you call and email the DME dealer to confirm that they received all of of your documentation and wait for further instructions from them.

After you have completed the above steps, it can become a waiting game. Some processes may be quicker than others and some may take longer than others. During this time, it's important to follow up with the DME Dealer to receive updates and to also communicate with zPods with any questions you may have.

Every state and every provider are going to be different. And, with full transparency, sometimes there can be denials that may not make sense based on the information that was submitted and supported by a doctor or a therapist.

After going through a denial, sometimes an appeal can be necessary. However, there are also opportunities to receive funding support for a safety bed by non-for-profits that offer grants. Therefore, if you are a family that is denied by your provider then reach out to zPods and request additional funding opportunities.
