8 Things To Think About When Applying For A Safety Bed

As we continue working with 100s of families who are pursuing coverage for a zPod, we are finding that it is not a one size fits all. There are always different challenges that can be expected and many that might be unexpected.

When looking to pursue coverage for a safety bed, think about the following 7 things:

  1. Every state within the United States will have different guidelines for Medicaid or Private Insurance Coverage and different perceptions of the scenario. For example, you may know someone that had successful coverage with the state of Michigan, but you have been denied in Arkansas. Therefore, it may not always be pleasant, but you may have to be accepting of your state's guidelines if you are covered through their Medicaid.

  2. If a doctor or therapist really believe that a safety bed can help your child, then as a parent, please make sure that they are thorough and detailed as to why they believe the bed may help your child. Specifically, when writing the Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) and a prescription.

  3. If you are looking to secure a safety bed, then you will need to also work with a Durable Medical Equipment Dealer (DME) who will complete home evaluations and the billing process to your insurance provider.

  4. Each Durable Medical Equipment Dealer may have their own requirements as to what providers they may work with. Therefore, when reaching out to a DME dealer you may have to speak with a couple different dealers who will be in network with your provider.

  5. If you receive a denial when applying for a safety bed, make sure you follow up with your DME Dealer and Insurance Provider to receive any and all details for the denial and then communicate the reasons with zPods. In other words, if you are denied, make sure you gather all information and tell zPods about it just in case the doctor, therapist, or us need to communicate more effectively with your provider on the details of why the bed can be helpful. There have been occasions where there was not enough information available for the provider to make the best determination as to why a zPod may be helpful for the child.

  6. If you are denied and have a Medicaid Waiver then make sure you keep the denial letter or get a copy as we can apply for coverage through the waiver program.

  7. Communication and clarification is key! And this one is very important! There have been times when we have spoken families to see if they need assistance and there will be confusion by communication.
For example, sometimes, a family may think that the doctor has completed their
documents for insurance approval and sent them to the DME dealer. However, after following up with the doctor they may have sent the documents to the wrong DME location.

  8. If you are denied through by your provider then feel free to consider grant opportunities through a Non-For-Profit. Message us if you need more information: support@zpodsforsleep.com

This process of pursuing coverage can be complex at times, but this is why we are available to make things easier.
